Massage benefits anyone

regardless of age and fitness level and is very effective in removing normal aches and pains that have an impact on our daily lives. A recent study has proven the benefits of massage for back pain. Other chronic conditions that respond well to massage include stress, sciatica, migraines, scoliosis, runners knee, tennis elbow, shoulder pain, and repetitive stress injury (RSI).

Massage is not only for people doing sport, anyone can benefit from regular massage.

I see people of all ages, my oldest client is 89 years young! I also work regularly with people with complex chronic conditions like MS and other neurological disorders. Keeping muscles supple can mean better health and fitness for everyone.

Sports people find regular massage is a terrific addition to their training programme.  Removing muscle tension improves flexibility and can prevent injuries.  I work with a variety of athletes including marathon runners, tri-athletes and cyclists.

Massage Therapies

Sports massage

Sports massage can help alleviate the stress and tension that builds up in the body’s soft tissues during physical activity. Massage can break down injuries and lesions that occur, due to overexertion and/or overuse. Sports massage is not just for the sports person: anyone can benefit from sports massage, including people in physically demanding jobs or those who spend hours behind a desk or in the car. Your treatment will include some or all of the following:

  • Myofascial Release

    – Myofascia is the tough tissue structure which surrounds all your muscles. When this is damaged or traumatised it can become tight and restrictive.

  • Sports Massage

    – using effleurage, petrissage, and compressions friction techniques

  • Trigger Point Therapy

    – Deep palpation on a specific ‘trigger’ or ‘knot’ to relax the area.

  • MET Stretching

    – Muscle Energy Stretching involves using light muscular contraction prior to stretching which helps to relax the muscle and limit the body’s protective reflex to contract whilst the muscle is being stretched.

  • Frictions

    – Direct pressure  over the soft tissue trauma area to manipulate the fibres. It is very useful for breaking down scar tissue and softening adhesions.

  • Soft Tissue Release

    – An advanced technique where stretching and friction is used on a specific area rather than the whole muscle

  • Kinesio/K-Taping

    – Improves muscle function, reduces pain and supports joints. K-Taping prolongs and supports sports massage therapy, continuing to provide treatment after you’ve left the clinic!

Dorn Method

The Dorn Method was developed by Dieter Dorn 40 years ago in Germany. It consists of a range of unique exercises and techniques developed to help joint and vertebrae slip back into their natural positions. It is a gentle and safe manual therapy, aiming to treat the cause of back and joint pain in people of all ages. By correcting misalignments of the spine and other joints, in a gentle way, Dorn can help with:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Joint problems such as hip, knee, shoulder, elbow
  • Leg length difference
  • Sciatica

Atlas Dorn MethodAn imbalance of the hip or pelvis can cause the spine to sit twisted on an uneven foundation. This can cause extra strain on the muscles and joints, leading to back pain and other musculoskeletal problems.

What does Dorn treatment involve?

First I will check your leg length; a difference of leg length is often due to misalignment of the hip joint. If necessary I will make simple safe corrections. I will show you how you can do these corrections at home to minimise future problems.

Next, I will check your pelvis for any misalignment followed by lumbar, thoracic and cervical spine checks. Any imbalances will be corrected. The corrections are done in a dynamic way; you work with me by moving the joint. The movement “distracts” the muscle and the joint slips easily into place. Dorn doesn’t involve any harsh movements, heavy forces or any ‘clicking or crunching’.

You will be shown some exercises to do at home which will help to maintain balance in your body.

Acupuncture (dry needling)

Medical acupuncture involves inserting fine needles for a therapeutic effect. Overall it is the western adaption of the Chinese method, just using modern up-to-date knowledge of anatomy and physiology. I use it to relieve muscular tension and trigger points before a deep tissue massage. It is also very effective where the acute pain is too high to tolerate touch.

Deep tissue massage

Deep tissue massage focuses on relaxing the deep tension by realigning deeper muscles and connective tissue. It works by physically breaking down areas of tension to relieve chronic pain and restore normal movement by loosening the tight tissue clusters. Anyone can feel the benefits of deep tissue massage. Muscular tension, stress and fatigue can affect all of us, athletes, DIY fanatics, gardeners, busy housewives, or stressed executives. Active or sedentary – you should find deep tissue massage relaxing and therapeutic as you can really feel those knots being ‘ironed out’. You will become aware of how your body reacts and tenses up under stress and by taking early action you can reduce those stress levels and relax.

Cupping

Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin to create suction. Cupping has many purposes, including detoxification, pain relief, to reduce inflammation, increase blood flow, promote relaxation and as a type of deep-tissue massage to relieve tension and for fascial release.

Biopuncture

Biopuncture is a therapy whereby natural remedies are injected into trigger points, inflamed areas, painful areas, scar tissue or poor healing areas, anywhere in the body, to stimulate natural healing. Most of the products are derived from plants and include Traumeel and other heel products.

Testimonials

Frequently asked questions

I came to see Magda with sciatica and lower back pain. She managed to get me pain free and now I just see her for maintenance to keep me pain free and mobile. Not bad for an 84 year old!
For nearly 5 years I have suffered chronic back pain until I was recommended to Magda, but after my first massage I felt 95% better.  I could not believe it as I have put up with this pain for nearly 5 years.  I actually felt like crying with relief, I have had now my second session and can actually bend down without pain. This treatment for me was the answer to my prayers. Roll on my other sessions, I cannot wait.
Had my first appointment with Magda today and wow. I left feeling like I was floating on air. Highly recommended.
Magda is an endearing therapist with “magic hands”. She knows where all my knots and tight areas are and just knows how to get rid of them. I always feel amazing after my massage!

What should I expect on a first massage session?

First I have a consultation session will all my clients.  You will be asked about your lifestyle, medical history, muscular aches and pains etc.  All information will remain confidential. I have a holistic approach and will tailor the massage to suit your individual needs.

What should I wear for my massage?

You will need to remove your outer clothing for the area I will work on, keeping only your underwear on. You will be covered with towels provided. Only the area I work on will be uncovered during the massage. Your modesty will be preserved at all times.

What if I feel self-conscious about my body?

Most people feel self-conscious about their body in some way or another. Please do not let this stop you having a massage! Massage therapists have seen all kinds of bodies in all shapes and forms and are not there to make judgments. You will be treated with respect and your modesty will be preserved at all times.

What do I do during a massage treatment?

Make yourself comfortable and relax. Many people close their eyes and relax during the treatment, others prefer to talk, it is your choice. You are welcome to ask questions any time during the treatment. If there is anything you like or dislike, or you prefer more or less pressure tell me and I will adapt the massage to suit you.
